In a previous blog I posted that my little girl was suffering with very loose watery stools and had gone off her food. After a visit to the vet I was asked to collect a stool sample, but, as she wasnt eating I found it increasingly difficult to collect said sample. I found I became a "stalker" watching her every move, waiting for that elusive "poop". It was then I observed her eating all kinds of poop.
I was totally grossed out, how was it possible she found poop way more appetising than the food and biscuits I prepared for her?
I informed my vet quickly incase she had picked up some kind of bacteria or parasite, this being the cause of her dulled appetite. He reassured me that it was not likely, but rather this behaviour was not uncommon in dogs. He briefed me on the history of a dogs digestion pointing out that it was more likely that Maggie was not getting the right nutrients in her diet.
Slightly more relieved, I set about searching the internet for others who had experienced the same problem. Turns out my vet was right it is rather common. I found a number of websites and books available on correcting the problem. Armed with a mountain of information, I set about making my own dog food. I began cooking up a storm, tempting her with all kinds of combinations. I quickly discoverd her likes and dislikes. By giving her a variety of fresh steamed vegetables blended with her favourite rice and chicken, along with her bowl of approved dog biscuits, she has stopped eating the poop. Her own poop is more soild and less smelly too making clean ups easier for me.
Whilst this may have worked for me, I cant guarantee it will work for every dog and owner faced with this situation, but if you have a problem with poo its worth a try.
Remember to always consult your trusted veterinarian before attempting any kind of dietary changes first.
